The Peter Tunney Experiment

The Peter Tunney Experiment

"DON'T PANIC"

"EVOLVE"

"THE REAL VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY CONSISTS NOT IN SEEING NEW LANDSCAPES BUT IN HAVING NEW EYES"

These are the words and phrases that hit me as I walked down 52nd street. Not because I was deep in thought trying to figure out the solution to all my problems. But because they were there. Large and bold. Painted and silkscreened and collaged together. All inside a storefront, along with a sign that read "Who is Peter Tunney?".

Curious, I walked in and asked the person sitting behind a laptop what this was all about. He kindly explained it was a studio for Pop Artist Peter Tunney. He went on to tell me how for years Tunney would only show to a select clientele. His works were not open to the public. Now with this space at 666 5th avenue on 52nd street you can not only see some of his work but you may actually catch him working. The Peter Tunney Experiment, as it is called, is a working studio/gallery.

Tunney's work incorporates pages from magazines, newspapers, books, catalogs, and such, collaged together. Over-the-top, bold typography with phrases like "We are all stumbling human beings" are painted and silk-screened on to create striking pieces of art.

The gallery is not very large, nor is it intimidating. You can see most of the larger pieces from the sidewalk. But don't be afraid, go on in and you can take a look at some of Tunney's diaries. These little works of art have doodles and pictures and text and are really worth the time to check out. So if you happen to be in the area stop by. You may just be fortunate enough to catch the artist hard at work.
