LOUPED IN: Nancy Jo Iacoi, from Photo Editor to Agent

She's worked at some of our most beloved magazines -- Rolling Stone, Time Out NY, Premiere, and Esquire -- and curated numerous photography exhibits.  Just recently she moved over to the the repping side of the business.  She's Nancy Jo Iacoi and she talks with SPD about her evolution, the photography community, and the difference between editorial and advertising...

"Curating shows came about as a natural extension of my developing relationships with photographers. I was always excited to see their personal work and I started getting ideas about sharing what I had seen.  I did two shows on my own: Exposed (1997) and ExtraOrdinary (1998), and then began to collaborate with friends in the business to do benefit auction exhibitions: WTC Photography Benefit (2001), Because I'm Worth It (2003),  and Portraiture (2008), which I love!

After 20 years working in magazines I was ready for a change and the opportunity to rebuild Orchard Represents with photographers such as Lorenzo Agius, Sarah A. Friedman, Anna Williams was an exciting challenge.  It was a great way to stay in a business I love without the deadlines!

I'm learning a lot about the differences between editorial and advertising.  Advertising is much more literal, and as much as creative directors and art buyers want to see the more creative work, it's the simple images that win campaigns (depending on the campaign of course).

I have been very fortunate to be in this business long enough to watch many individual photographers grow and also see many changes in the industry. I am always inspired by seeing new work."
