A Note from SPD

A Note from SPD

Dear SPD Community,

Yesterday I sent this to all the members of SPD, and I wanted to share it with you here too.

Although it doesn't seem as though three years have passed, the time has come to bid farewell as President of the Board of Directors. I'm grateful to the entire Board for working together to make SPD the leading community support in our industry. Thanks to the Board's hard work and collaborative efforts, there are quite a number of accomplishments over the past year:

Although it doesn't seem as though three years have passed, the time has come to bid you farewell as President of the Board of Directors for SPD. I'm grateful to the entire Board for working together to make SPD the leading community of support in our industry. Thanks to the Board's hard work and collaborative efforts, there are quite a number of accomplishments over the past year I'd like to make note of:
Spearheaded by Josh Klenert, this year SPD launched its first-ever Design Annual for the iPad. The SPD 45 App debuted as one of the top 10 Reference Apps in iTunes!
A fantastic PUB 46 competition chaired by Andrea Dunham & Brandon Kavulla, along with Luke Hayman as Magazine of the Year Chair. In addition, it was a groundbreaking year for the Digital competition, chaired by Josh Klenert & Jeremy LaCroix, thanks to our first-ever tablet categories and the Tablet App of the Year Award.
SPD had its most successful Photography & Illustration Auction to date, Real or Surreal, chaired by Gail Anderson & Jennifer Pastore
Our first-ever three-peat of sold out Speakers Series events, chaired by Robert Newman: a night with Richard Turley & the team from Bloomberg Businessweek, a night with Robert Priest and Grace Lee of O, the Oprah Magazine, and another apps-focused night, "These Guys Kick APPS" with the creative chiefs behind PROJECT, TRVL and Joe Zeff Studios. In addition to our sold out Spring, we had sold-out and standing room only events in the Fall featuring Albert Watson, Arthur Hochstein, and our first-ever Apps night, along with our Unsung Heroes series in Los Angeles. These events are helping SPD members take the lead in the new editorial digital age changing the direction and shape of our industry.
SPD.org led by Robert Newman & Josh Klenert has seen continued traffic increase with over 200,000 page views for one post (we'll let you guess which one that was!).
A focus on continuing to build-in opportunities for members to get together outside of work and network, strengthening your ties to your professional community for camaraderie and support -- one great holiday party and networking night at a time. Special thanks to Todd Weinberger for co-chairing that with me, and to all the committee members who worked to find us great venues and sponsors.
New features for the Design Annual, PUB 46 (stay tuned for its release this Fall) chaired by Don Morris.
The Student Outreach Committee continues to thrive under the leadership of Ian Doherty and Neil Jamieson -- more robust and original work from students entering both the Student Design and Student Photo Competitions, more internship placements and summer housing provided for the winners, and more Student Members than ever.
Another outstanding installment of the Master Class Series, chaired by Kate Elazegui, featuring Steve Duenes of The New York Times Graphics Department.
I feel the future of our community is indeed bright and full of possibilities and I envision SPD and its members leading the industry into greater periods of growth and prosperity. I am pleased to welcome SPD's new board members: Ian Adelman, Natasha Lunn, Dora Somosi, Richard Turley, Todd Weinberger, Joe Zeff, and a great congratulations to the new Directors for the 2011/12 year: President:  Josh Klenert, Vice Presidents: Andrea Dunham & Jennifer Pastore, Treasurer: Gail Bichler, and Secretary: Nancy Stamatopoulos.

Serving as the President of the Board has been pure joy, and I feel richer for having had the chance to meet so many of you at SPD meetings and events. This organization has been a very special part of my livelihood, and I thank you for honoring me with your trust and commitment. It has been a privilege to work with my fellow Directors on the board, as well as the membership. I look forward to contributing and to seeing you all at future SPD events!

Sincerely,

Nathalie Kirsheh
