Happy Birthday, Pop Mech

Happy Birthday, Pop Mech Popular Mechanics, one of the oldest continuously-published magazines in existence, celebrates its 110th anniversary in March. DD Michael Lawton gives the background on their cover concept.

"Here's the result of our cover-type collaboration with Cape Town, South Africa-based designer Jordan MetcalfI didn't really give Jordon any direction at the start, just 20 or so covers from our library that I've admired for some time. His type solution winks at designs from 1930s and 40s, but I think the final cover has the salability and punch of what we try to produce every month. It's a very simple design and fairly stripped of secondary sell lines, plus, as a bonus for newsstand copies, we played with a matt and gloss varnish just to amplify the "collectors" stamp logic.
