Honoring Amid Capeci, Benefiting A Good Cause

Honoring Amid Capeci, Benefiting A Good Cause
Last Thursday, the Society of Publication Designers was honored to co-host an auction of extraordinary photography and illustration work with Entertainment Weekly magazine to benefit the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in honor of late Design Director Amid Capeci.

A who's who of magazine illustrators and photographers donated amazing pieces, including works by Ruven Afanador, Roberto Parada, Tim O'Brien, Peggy Sirota, Edel Rodriguez and Art Streiber.  Many of the photographs and illustrations  for sale where commissioned by Capeci himself during his extraordinary career as Design Director at Rolling Stone, Newsweek and Entertainment Weekly.

The art was procured by Lisa Berman (EW, Director of Photograhy), Jodi Peckman (Rolling Stone, Photo Director),  Michele Romero (EW, Photo Editor) , and Dirk Barnett (Newsweek, Design Director)!

The night featured heart-felt speeches from Lisa Berman, Capeci's sister, Claire, and his Oncologist, Dr. Jedd Wolchok of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Wolchok is a renowned researcher who revealed that he felt "honored" to have been a part of Amid's life and reinforced his determination to find a cure saying that Capeci had access to "the best care medical science had to offer" but that still "more work needs to be done". (see this great piece in the New Yorker for more info.)

The auction was  attended by Capeci's wife, Amy Conway, and children Luca (who bid on and won Peggy Sirota's portrait of Michael Jordan) and Virginia (who took home Joe Newton's Cupcake silk-screen print) in addition to his mother, sisters, and in-laws. The room was filled with a host of creative directors, photo directors, illustrators, musicians, photographers, artists.  Amid's sister Claire noted:
"It was an amazing event and tribute for Amid" and that this night of music, art and laughter "made what would have otherwise been a completely sad day, one that we will all remember in exactly the opposite light for many, many years to come."

By the end of this incredible night, which would have been Amid's 51st birthday, all of the 60 pieces where sold raising almost $20,000!

PLEASE DONATE: Donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering in honor of Capeci are still available here.

Special thanks to all those from across our community who volunteered their time to help organize the event including Martha Stewart Omnimedia for their donation and to photographer Ryan Messina for shooting the event, and Sasha Preziosa, EW design and photo assistant.
