Priest and Grace's Howler!
...turns out i'm not alone, the large format, incredible paper stock and fragrant inky smell is getting well deserved attention from all over the business... Howler featured in last week's New York Mag (described as "beautiful" on their Approval Matrix) and just yesterday the Times' 6th floor blog featured Howler in its musings on the depth of soccer's penetration in the US (Also highlighting the awesomeness of the cut-out paper dolls from the back page! worth the price of admission alone!)
Haven't seen a copy yet? Check out this glimpse at every page of issue 1
The premier issue features a who's who of illustration giants from the likes of Diego Patino (the awesome Klinsman cover above!), Brian Rea, Edel Rodriguez, Emiliano Ponzi, Olvaro Tapia Hidalgo, Tim McDonagh David Folvari, Emmanuel Polanco and more; plus great action photography and portraiture. As ever with a Priest and Grace project Howler features countless smart well-executed typographic ideas and ambitious design concepts. The gorgeous paper makes the design soar and the attention to detail is such that every time I pick up the issue I find something new and cool. All things considered I think I'm even okay with the 12 pages devoted to Robert's favorite team Man Utd (though more Preston North End coverage is encouraged next time lads!)
You may remember from a post a while ago on spd.org that Howler's first issue was funded in large part by a kickstarter campaign. Well it worked and Howler is testament to what a passionate talented crew can pull off with a shared goal, ambition...and a boat load of football fanaticism! Congrats to all involved...if you need me, I'll be waiting impatiently at my welcome mat for issue #2!
