What's New This Year
Just like every year, there have been some changes. We hope that it makes the competition better and more exciting... yada yada. Here is what you need to know:
Print There are a few new categories for SPD 49!
First, Feature: Still Life has been broken-out in both Design and Photography as a way to judge killer statement photographs and the layouts that feature them. A new Lifestyle: Travel/Shelter/Food category has been added to better represent a lot of beautiful work that was previously competing against conceptual still-life. Then, to highlight the evolution of many magazines' design even when total redesigns haven't happened, we have added Redesign: Section. And finally, for smaller circulation publications, there are expanded categories that recognize the compelling (and frequently better) work that's being done with smaller budgets.
We all know that magazines aren't just "magazines" anymore. To be great, you have to be great on many platforms. So you have a print issue, tablet issue, mobile app, and website? What about a microsite, standalone app, or single issue publication? Enter Here! This category recognizes true cross-platform excellence and is open to different ways of showing how your brand has extended itself consistently with the highest degree of visual excellence.
We have refined our digital categories to encourage more standalone digital brands to enter. Part of that is the return of the Smartphone! Best Smartphone App and Best Smartphone Website are new additions for SPD 49. There is also Social Experience for apps and web, that recognize the ability to generate social buzz and interaction from visual journalism.
The only award chosen by the SPD membership is now open to digital entries as well. Plus, its only $5 to enter. Want to vote for your favorite? Join SPD today!
How to Enter
Step 1 Log on HERE
This will take you to our online entry page where you can log-in or set up a profile. (We'll be using this info later if you win!) Yes you do still enter a printed tearsheet, but fill in all your details online. Get your caption and credit info right first time and done! No more waiting to see if your payment was processed. Plus: print an invoice right away.
Step 2 Give us the Details
Choose what categories you're entering, enter your captions (this tells us what great work you're submitting) and, before the entry deadline, enter your credits. It's the same for both print and digital categories.
Step 3 Print & Mail
Once you are done, click the "Print Label" button on the website and the labels will automatically generate. Attach them to the back of each of your entries (The captions are printed on the labels so you know what to stick on what). Package them carefully and send or hand-deliver to:
SPD • 27 Union Square West, Suite 207 • New York, NY 10003
If you have any questions you can call (212-223-3332) or email us (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Then sit back, relax and wait for the automatically generated email confirming receipt! (Does not apply to digital, we get your entry the moment you upload)
Since 1965, SPD's competition has yielded hundreds of thousands of entries from around the world. The awards promote and recognize the best in editorial design in print and digital. All pieces selected by the jury during the first round of judging are Merit Award winners and included in the PUB 49 Annual. During the second round of judging, judges vote on the Gold Awards for Excellence and the Silver Awards for Distinctive Achievement and the top finalists for the Magazine of the Year Award. The Medal finalists for print and digital will be announced in March 2014. The Silver and Gold Medals, along with the winner of the Magazine of the Year Award will be presented at the Awards Gala in May 2014.
Pub 49 print is led by co-chairs Alex Grossman (Creative Director, Bon Apetite) and Cybele Grandjean (Partner, Ligature). Together they curate a jury selected from the best and most-innovative talents working in editorial creative today, committed to the highest standards of excellence in publication design. Judges will focus on work specific to their strongest talents, with teams con-centrating only on design, only on photography, and only on illustration.
We are also proud to announce our Digital Co-Chairs: Scher Foord, Executive Director of Design, Condé Nast Technology and Ken Olling, Founder & Creative Director of Katachi.
Let's not forget, our favorite Magazine of the Year Chair, Robert Newman. He's back!!!
