Student Design Competition: CLOSED

Student Design Competition: CLOSED

The deadline for this year's competition was Monday, March 8, so the competition is now closed. But we do it every year, and the rules are generally the same in case you want to start brainstorming already for next year.

Every year, SPD holds a professional competition to find the best editorial design out there. Now all you students have the chance to be a part of this world-class event! Enter up to 5 entries according to our categories and rules, and you could win cash prizes, the Adobe Creative Suite software and--perhaps best of all--an internship! Check out all the details below:

Download the PDF containing this year's rules, categories and entry form here. You can also read the competition categories online here.

**Attention Professors/Faculty: Download a poster advertising our competition here if you'd like to post it at your school.
Competition Call for Entries and Poster Imagery by 2009 winner Melanie Teppich

Monday, March 8, 2010, 5pm. That means your entries must be in our office by 5pm that day. You can mail it, express-mail it, hand deliver it or have it sent by carrier pigeons, we don't care ... it just must be in our hands by that time.

Current Student Members get their first 3 entries free. If you're not one, you can sign up now for $25 and get your first 3 entries free too. Otherwise, each entry is $10.

You can pay with a credit card or money order using the entry form, but the easiest way is to pay it online through PayPal.

• First place: The Adobe Scholarship in Honor of B.W. Honeycutt--a $2,500 prize--, a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York. (AND we often use the first-place winner's artwork in the following year's competition imagery, like we've done this year with 2009 winner Melanie Teppich's design.)
• Second place: A $1,000 prize, a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.

• Third place: A $500 prize, a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.

• All winners will also be honored with an Award of Excellence and an invitation to SPD's Annual Awards Gala in May 2010 in New York City. Award-winning work (including several honorable mentions) will be showcased on our student blog AND printed in our PUB 45 Design Annual along with all the professional competition winners.

As always, there's an awesome team of judges who will be seeing ALL the work entered. Even if you don't win, it's a great opportunity to get your work in front of their eyes:
Kristin Fitzpatrick • Design Director, Marie Claire
Chris Hercik • Design Director, Sports Illustrated
Joe Hutchinson • Art Director, Rolling Stone
Tim Leong • Design Director, Complex
Michael McCormick • Design Director, Philadelphia Magazine

Check out a few of the most popular questions here:
• Where do I get the copy?
• Where do I get the photos?
• Are the internships only in summer?
• Can grad students enter? What about high school students?
• What about December grads?
• What if I live outside of the U.S.?

Obviously the money, prizes and fame are great, but really, it's the internship that could kick-start your entire career. In case you need proof, check out reports from some of our previous winners about their internship experience:
• Tina Nguyen at Fortune
