Illustration is changing, showing up in unexpected ways, blurring borders, reinventing itself as a medium for bold expression in the digital age. Tightening budgets are breeding creative solutions. Digital publishing i smoking away from the stifling proliferation of photographic syndication, stock imagery, and sameness. Illustrators are moving to the forefront, providing the character and dynamism needed to stand out in a crowd of predictability.

And they're doing it with SPOTS.

The static full-page illustration is no longer the standard of excellence. In both printed and digital publications, the most exciting illustration weaves its way into the fabric of the story, makes trends tangible, tells the deeper truth, communicates identities, and often wins the spotlight for itself.

SPOTS honors the illustrations that outshine all the others when the spotlight comes around.

SPD
is the only organization to honor this exciting, evolving artform with
its annual SPOTS competition, a part of our mission to promote the best
in editorial design, today and every day. Commissioned work by
publications of any kind (printed or digital, paper or screen) is
awarded, along with UNcommissioned work, pieces published only by you,
the illustrator.

Download the forms and Call for Entries after the jump...
We're also having a party again in September to honor the winning ADs and Illustrators and launch this fabulous little book, with cocktails, mingling and medals for the top winners.

WHO'S JUDGING? An outstanding panel of editorial illustrators and art directors who also happen to love and respect illustration, including:

Arem Duplessis, The New York Times Magazine
Tom O'Quinn, Money Magazine
Francesca Messina, McGraw-Hill Construction Group
Nicholas Felton, Feltron
Jessica Walsh, Sagmeister
Dungjai Pungauthaikan, Metropolis Magazine
and
Criswell Lappin, Fahrenheit 212 (SPOTS Co-Chair)
Matthew Lenning, MAT: Design Company (SPOTS Co-Chair)

Download the Call for Entries here (PDF DOWNLOAD), and get your SPOTS in by the March 30th deadline!

Tightening budgets are breeding creative solutions. Online publishing initially brought a stifling proliferation of photographic syndication, stock imagery, sameness. The static full-page illustration is no longer the standard of excellence. In both printed and digital publications, the most exciting illustration is weaving its way into the fabric of the story, dancing with the written word, making trends tangible, telling deeper truths, communicating identities, and often wrestling the spotlight for itself.

Communities are forming around these images and their makers, and new models are emerging. MAGAZINE OF THE YEAR CHAIR:
Bruce Ramsay

COMPETITION CAPTAIN:
Nancy Stamatopoulos, AD, Supermarket News

A few things to know about the jury for the SPD judging:
This
year, special effort was made to curate a jury of experts within three
significant disciplines: design, photography, and illustration. The
jury will vote on entries within the classifications in which
they are expert: photo experts on photo entries, design experts on
design entries, etc. The only exception to this rule is for the entries
in the Magazine of the Year classification, where work is judged for
all its significant attributes.

To ensure fairness, judges are
not permitted to vote on their own rare specimens; in that case, their
Captain steps in to vote in their stead.

No discussion about the
specimens is allowed during the voting process, to prevent lobbying and
undue influence. We leave that to the government.
After a glorious Gala Friday night, we're still recovering a bit, but wanted to put out a huge congrats to ALL of the Gold and Silver Medal winners, and the Merit Winners, of SPD's PUB 44. Just 10% of the total entries in January were selected overall, which is a huge, huge accomplishment!

As we work to finish adding the almost 700 winners of PUB 44 to the Galleries (check back here by the end of the week!) we're happy to post a full list of the Gold & Silver winners after the jump, or you can download a pdf of the press release here, and check back for party pictures as we get them (and if you've got them, send them in!). Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate the work, and more importantly, the fabulous people who DO the work: you're the reason we can do this! And now, we're off to soak our feet a bit more; you, check out these winners...
"Spot" illustrations may be small in size, but they play an enormous
role in the world of publication design. Measuring no more than 5 x 6
inches, a spot much catch readers' eyes, draw them into a story, and
convey complex ideas--often while competing with other visual elements
on the page.

The Society of Publication Designers is the only
organization to honor these hard-working little gems with its annual SPOTS Competition. Chaired this year by Matthew Lenning, Design
Director at Bon Appétit, and Don Morris, Principal at Don Morris
Design, SPOTS will be judged by a panel of leading publication art
directors and commercial illustrators, with the winning entries will be featured
in a special, self-contained book and sent to SPD members and winning
illustrators for FREE, as well as featured in the PUB 44 Design Annual,
and archived in a special gallery on this very site, linking to the
winning illustrator's websites.

Read on for all the details, the call for entries, and links to past winners...

*Big thanks to Yuko Shimizu for the illustration on the Call for Entries, above!
Series of Spots

ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS
Spots must be submitted as a printed tearsheet, or as a color copy of the original tearsheet from the magazine. You may enter as many spots as you wish. For the series category, staple the tearsheets together in the upper left-hand corner and attach the entry form to the back of the last tearsheet.

(We're sorry, but tearsheets cannot be returned; if necessary, please make a high-quality color copy of the tearsheet you would like to enter, and send that instead.)

FEES
$25 Single Spot
$35 Series of Spots

Enter five or more spots and get a sixth spot entry for free!
(One freebie only, though, no matter how many total spots you enter.)

Send one payment (with check or credit card information) to cover the total number of entries. Where is it?

A: It's coming, we promise! We were hoping to have it in your hand already, but we've had to zig a little... the great news is, it's being designed by Dirk Barnett and he's making it gorgeous, so have faith! It's really coming. And if you're one of those winning illustrators from last year, check your e-mail, because we're sending you a special note about it. And truly, our plan is to have that book, and this year's book, in your hands asap. Resources! Who doesn't need more of those right now?

Q: About that deadline... I'm out of town until the 5th / on a serious deadline / having my tonsils out, etc. and I can't make it. You're going to extend it, right? When is the REAL deadline?

A: Oh, the deadline is NOON on April 30th, and it is very real. We're judging the next day, so we'll need your work in-hand on the 30th, or we will have to regretfully see your work next year.

Q: I don't have tearsheets. Can I send just the illo as a printout?

A: Sorry, but we need to see the work in its editorial context. This is a very unique competition for just that reason: it's about the problem solving as much as the brilliant work, and we need to see both in order to judge appropriately how the challenge was met. Please feel free to send a color print-out of a pdf of the tearsheet, that works just fine...
