THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED.
That means your entries must be in our office by 5pm that day. You can mail it, express-mail it, hand deliver it or have it sent by carrier pigeons, we don't care ... it just must be in our hands by that time.

ENTRY FEES
 
Current Student Members get their first 3 entries free. If you're not a current member, you can sign up now and enjoy this benefit. 

Otherwise, each entry is $10. 

You can pay with a credit card or money order using the entry form in the downloadable PDF, but the easiest (and safest) way to pay is online through PayPal here.

First place: The Adobe Scholarship in Honor of B.W. Honeycutt--a $2,500 prize, Adobe software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.
 
Second place: $1,000 prize, Adobe software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.

Third place: $500 prize, Adobe software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.

Honorable Mention: We may choose one or more entries to receive Honorable Mention status which often includes the opportunity to accept a summer internship (last year our top 10 finalists all got internships!)

All winners will also be honored with an Award of Excellence and an invitation to SPD's Annual Awards Gala in May 2013 in New York City. Award-winning work (including several honorable mentions) will be showcased on our student blog AND printed in our PUB 48 Design Annual along with all the professional competition winners.

We are also announcing this year, for the first time ever, the Site of the Year Awards where we'll crown the year's best website. To level the playing field we will offer two Site of the Year Awards for sites both with and without a print component.
 
Who can enter you ask? Web sites and other digital publications containing dynamic or regularly updated editorial content including text, pictures, video, audio, animation or a combination of any of these.

Every year, SPD holds a professional competition to find the best editorial design out there. Now all you students have the chance to be a part of this world-class event! Enter up to 5 entries according to our categories and rules, and you could win cash prizes, the Adobe Creative Suite software and--perhaps best of all--an internship! Competition Call for Entries and Poster Imagery by 2009 winner Melanie Teppich

DEADLINE
Monday, March 8, 2010, 5pm. That means your entries must be in our office by 5pm that day. You can mail it, express-mail it, hand deliver it or have it sent by carrier pigeons, we don't care ... it just must be in our hands by that time.

ENTRY FEES
Current Student Members get their first 3 entries free. If you're not one, you can sign up now for $25 and get your first 3 entries free too. Otherwise, each entry is $10. 

You can pay with a credit card or money order using the entry form, but the easiest way is to pay it online through PayPal. 

WHAT YOU CAN WIN
• First place: The Adobe Scholarship in Honor of B.W. Honeycutt--a $2,500 prize--, a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York. (AND we often use the first-place winner's artwork in the following year's competition imagery, like we've done this year with 2009 winner Melanie Teppich's design.)
 
• Second place: A $1,000 prize, a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.

• Third place: A $500 prize, a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite software, and a summer internship at one of the top magazines in New York.

• All winners will also be honored with an Award of Excellence and an invitation to SPD's Annual Awards Gala in May 2010 in New York City. Award-winning work (including several honorable mentions) will be showcased on our student blog AND printed in our PUB 45 Design Annual along with all the professional competition winners.

A few things to know about the jury for the SPD judging:
This year, special effort was made to curate a jury of experts within three significant disciplines: design, photography, and illustration. The jury will vote on entries within the classifications in which they are expert: photo experts on photo entries, design experts on design entries, etc. The only exception to this rule is for the entries in the Magazine of the Year classification, where work is judged for all its significant attributes.

To ensure fairness, judges are not permitted to vote on their own rare specimens; in that case, their Captain steps in to vote in their stead.

No discussion about the specimens is allowed during the voting process, to prevent lobbying and undue influence. We leave that to the government.

A special category was added for this year's competition, the CREATURE FEATURE, to honor our animal friends featured in great publications this past year. All entry fees for this category will be donated to the organization Bide-a-wee, whose mission is to promote and support safe, loving, long-term relationships between people and companion animals by providing a continuum of services and programs that are innovative, personalized, and high-quality. The SPD donation has been made in the name of the CREATURE FEATURE winner, Fred Woodward and his creative team from GQ:

The Society of Publication Designers is the only organization to honor these hard-working little gems with its annual SPOTS Competition. Chaired this year by Matthew Lenning, Design Director at Bon Appétit, and Don Morris, Principal at Don Morris Design, SPOTS will be judged by a panel of leading publication art directors and commercial illustrators, with the winning entries will be featured in a special, self-contained book and sent to SPD members and winning illustrators for FREE, as well as featured in the PUB 44 Design Annual, and archived in a special gallery on this very site, linking to the winning illustrator's websites.

ELIGIBILITY
Any editorial spot appearing in a periodical [print or online] or annual report with a publication date of 2008 (if it isn't 2008, we won't take it... we know it's already April, and that gorgeous spot you did last October that ran in a Jan '09 issue is perfect for this, but we'll have to see that next year).

A spot is defined as a published illustration--color or black & white in any medium--that is no larger than 5" x 6" or 30 square inches. Spots published in advertisements or books are not eligible.

ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS
Spots must be submitted as a printed tearsheet, or as a color copy of the original tearsheet from the magazine. This allows the spot to be judged in the context of its editorial material. If other illustrations that should not be judged appear on the same page, cross them out.

Attach a photocopy of the entry form to the back of each tearsheet. You may enter as many spots as you wish. For the series category, staple the tearsheets together in the upper left-hand corner and attach the entry form to the back of the last tearsheet.

(We're sorry, but tearsheets cannot be returned; if necessary, please make a high-quality color copy of the tearsheet you would like to enter, and send that instead.)

Q: Hey, I didn't get last year's book of winners! Where is it?
A: It's coming, we promise! We were hoping to have it in your hand already, but we've had to zig a little... the great news is, it's being designed by Dirk Barnett and he's making it gorgeous, so have faith! It's really coming. And if you're one of those winning illustrators from last year, check your e-mail, because we're sending you a special note about it. And truly, our plan is to have that book, and this year's book, in your hands asap. Resources! Who doesn't need more of those right now?
Q: About that deadline... I'm out of town until the 5th / on a serious deadline / having my tonsils out, etc. and I can't make it. You're going to extend it, right? When is the REAL deadline?
A: Oh, the deadline is NOON on April 30th, and it is very real. We're judging the next day, so we'll need your work in-hand on the 30th, or we will have to regretfully see your work next year.
Q: I don't have tearsheets. Can I send just the illo as a printout?
A: Sorry, but we need to see the work in its editorial context. This is a very unique competition for just that reason: it's about the problem solving as much as the brilliant work, and we need to see both in order to judge appropriately how the challenge was met. Please feel free to send a color print-out of a pdf of the tearsheet, that works just fine...
