Brian Stauffer Illustrations

Brian Stauffer Illustrations

Illustrator Brian Stauffer has been on a tear the past couple years, creating a brilliant body of work for publications as diverse as Worth, The New Yorker, the Huffington app, and countless altweeklies, as well as doing some knockout posters along the way. His cover illustrations for altweeklies from Kansas City to San Francisco have been powerful, pointed, and provocative, while at the same time he has created delicate and elegant covers for Worth. And like a great blues guitarist, Brian keeps getting better and better, adding new shadings and nuances to his work, as with this classic, painterly swan poster illustration for the University of Baltimore. We've got a dozen more wonderful Brian Stauffer illustrations on the turn page, and you can see many more at his website.

Illustration Magazine: Great Resource and Inspiration

Illustration Magazine: Great Resource and Inspiration

One of the best resources for archival illustration I've found lately is Illustration magazine, published and edited by Dan Zimmer. This quarterly magazine is jammed with beautifully reproduced illustrations, magazine and book covers, and in-depth stories about illustrators of all kinds from 1900-1970. Of course the printed magazine is the best way to appreciate all this brilliant work, but their website has digital versions available of all previous issues. This is an amazing resource and learning guide. In addition, they have extensive links to other sites that will keep you looking and marveling for a long time.… MORE

"Shapes are my friends."

Last April at Semi-Permanent Sydney, I had the thrill of meeting and befriending one of my heroes, the terrific screenprinter Kate Gibb. I've been in love with her work since I laid eyes on her first record cover for Mono, back in 1997. Since that time, she's become the go-to artist for the Chemical Brothers, having created a career's worth of brilliant work for both full-length studio album covers and singles. Beyond that, she's created wide-ranging image campaigns for Dries Van Noten as well as Penguin books. … MORE

As Art Director of W and in my pursuit to side with the wondrous world of art collecting, I've been keeping note of some stimulating work currently being produced by young artists. One abstract creator I've had my eye on is Carlyle Stewart, whom I met while attending an art auction benefit last May. His mediums vary from collage paintings and photo montages, to Linear and Tonal drawings. … MORE
