Art Intern

Food Network Magazine (Hearst Corporation) is seeking a graphic design student for an internship in the Art Department. The intern will assist in the daily workflow of the magazine. Duties will include: updating layouts, minor imaging work, and some design.

Candidates should have an interest in magazine publishing, strong working knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop. Interest in food a plus.

Duration: January-April
Applicants must receive college credit for the internship this position is unpaid. A commitment of 2-3 days a week is required, from 10 am to 6 pm (flexible).

Freelance Designer

Niche Media, publisher of several city-based luxury magazines including Gotham magazine, is looking for a full-time in-house freelancer on a senior designer level. Start date is Monday November 24, with commitment until at least the end of the year. Must know InDesign and have editorial design experience, including features, and be comfortable working with templates and style sheets. Creative Director - Billboard Magazine

In this key role, you will oversee creative direction for all Billboard editorial properties, including a weekly business magazine and two websites:
Billboard.com, a consumer music fan site; and Billboard.biz, a B2B music business news and community site.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop innovative design, layout and visualizations for Nielsen data and Billboard charts, news, interviews and video for both consumer and business readers for print and online platforms. Primary responsibilities include Billboard.com, Billboard.biz and Billboard, the weekly print magazine.

Work hands-on with Editorial Director and Executive Editor to create weekly business concept and/or celebrity-focused Billboard magazine covers.

Supervise editorial design staff and collaborate with editorial, production, marketing, sales, and licensing departments to build cohesive brand identities across all platforms.

Oversee custom publications and books including Latin Grammy Awards Program and several trade publications.

Manage the department budget.

Art Director

Foreign Policy magazine, a two-time National Magazine Award winner with a strong visual identity, is searching for an art director. The ideal candidate would have at least five years' design experience, a passionate desire to translate big ideas about the world to a wide audience, and a keen interest in web as well as print design. The art director supervises a team of two staff designers and cultivates and works closely with a network of freelance photographers and illustrators. With overall responsibility for the look and feel of FP, the art director plays a key role in the editorial process, personally conceives of and designs important pieces in the magazine and is an experienced manager. Experience with web design and a strong familiarity with technology are strongly desired.

Photo Editor

We are looking for a photo editor in our New York City (SoHo) office who will be responsible for the production of all original photography and the overseeing of stock images for all sections of the magazine. He or she will work closely with the creative director to bring fresh and dynamic visuals to the magazine.

Responsibilities include:
• Producing photo shoots: hiring models, hair, and makeup, securing locations and permits, orchestrating shoot logistics and all aspects of production.
• Conceptualizing photo treatments with creative director and illustrate stories in all sections of the magazine.
• Coordinating with photographers (and others as necessary) to ensure materials (rough edits and final hi-res) are delivered on deadline.
• Maintaining departmental budgets.
• Negotiating fees and overseeing all contracts.

• Assigning photographers for all sections of the magazine. This requires knowledge of all areas of photography including lifestyle, conceptual, still life, portrait, fashion.
• Attending key shoots to ensure the magazine's vision is carried out. (some travel involved)
• Overseeing small photo department and interns (including hiring interns)
• Maintaining and establishing relationships with photographers, stylists, modeling agencies, and agencies handling hair stylists and makeup artists.
• Identifying and developing relationships with photographers who should be working for the magazine.
