    Come join the staff of one of America's classic magazines! Southern Living, the nation's 6th largest consumer monthly, is looking for a talented Photo Director to help reinvent the photographic quality of the magazine. This is a rare opportunity to make an impact on Southern Living's 15 million monthly readers as it shares the fascinating places, people, homes, gardens, and foods that make this region unique. Duties: The Photo Director will help implement the visual evolution of Southern Living by raising the level of photography in the magazine. Work in tandem with Director of Photography and Art Director to set the visual tone for the magazine. Create and implement a hybrid system that maximizes both the talents and the efficiencies of key in-house photographers with a stable of top-level freelance photographers and stylists. Also, create and implement a system, from story concept to image selection, that ensures the highest level of photography for our pages. Perform stock photo searches as needed. Desired background and experience: 6-10 years experience at a lifestyle title in a photo editor or similar role. Outstanding technical and visual knowledge required to communicate easily with photographers and stylists. Expertise in travel, lifestyle, food, environmental, portraits and conceptual photography a must. Deep knowledge of local, regional and national freelance photographers and stylists for both new work and stock purchases. Degree in photography or related liberal arts field preferred. Ability to work under tight deadlines. Position is based at Southern Living's headquarters in Birmingham, AL.
