Art Department Intern

  • Job Description:
Discover Magazine is currently seeking Art Department Interns. Candidate must be a senior level undergraduate student or a graduate student with strong print production skills enrolled in a fine arts or communications design program/institution. Excellent typography and conceptual imaging skills are bare necessities for this internship. Highly proficient InDesign users strongly preferred. Fast learners more comfortable with Quark will be considered (for the record, we use InDesign CS2 and we're migrating to CS5 in the coming weeks). For the best possible learning experience, we require maintaining at least 15 hours weekly within our offices in Manhattan. Working under the direction of the art director, this intern will conceptualize, sketch, comp, and produce editorial designs for a 1-million-plus circulation national science magazine focused on long-form narrative journalism. Additionally, the intern will work under direction from the photo editor to provide administrative and research support, learning effective techniques for finding and sourcing high-quality existing imagery. Finally, this internship will also include training in production workflow, software, and techniques to maintain page geometries, typographic standards, and shipping final files to press. Other duties will include taking a proactive role in maintaining the editorial wall, participating in art meetings, and creating the occasional support media for screen or print properties, or print campaigns. We're also in the midst of creating our first iPad version of the magazine, and if there is interest, the intern will participate in that, as well. Between cycles of the monthly issue, we also produce quarterly newsstand-only special issues which allow for more creative leverage, and which the intern and art director work on together very closely. All interested candidates should please send resume and cover letter to Erik Spooner, Art Director: espooner@discovermagazine.com This internship is UNPAID and may be used for credit.
