Senior Designer

  • Job Description:
    The Senior Designer is responsible for designing front-of-the-book stories for the print magazine as well as translating them for the iPad and Android tablets under the direction of the Design Director and Creative Director. He/she is responsible for stories from concept to completion. The Senior Designer will collaborate with the photo team in defining the visual direction for stories and will help edit pickup film. He/she will collaborate with editors and as well as other designers and the production department during the monthly design and closing cycles of the print magazine and tablet editions. The designer will commission illustration and contribute to art discussions regarding visual concepts for the issues. * Design innovative, dynamic front-of-book layouts for the print magazine and for the tablet editions under the supervision of the Design Director. * Guide assigned stories through the entire production process (visual concept, image choice, layout, print orders, page files, page proofs). * Commission illustrations.

  • Job Requirements: American Express is an equal opportunity employer. The ideal candidate would: * Have a BFA in graphic design from an accredited design school. * Have solid editorial design experience (a minimum of two years) on print publications and, ideally, tablet editions. * Be proficient in InDesign and Illustrator (a must). Knowledge of Woodwing, Adobe DPS and Photoshop is a plus. * Have a strong understanding of, and passion for, typography and design principles. * Have solid organizational skills and the ability to multitask and work well under pressure. * Have a willingness to work the hours necessary to meet deadlines. * Be a high-energy, enthusiastic self-starter. * Have a collaborative disposition and be a flexible, adaptable team player. * Have a strong interest in and appreciation of the magazine's subject matter. * In addition to an updated resume, candidates must submit a link to an online portfolio or 5 work samples via pdf in order to be considered for the position.
