  • Job Description:
    Under the direction of the Design Director, this position conceptualizes, art directs and designs the assigned pages for each magazine issue. The Deputy AD works seamlessly with editors and stylists and photographers to create content that is within the visual direction of the magazine to make choices that maintain the creative vision, brand, and standard of quality. This position interacts with editors, stylists, the photography and production departments in addition to many outside freelance creatives. The Deputy AD also hires and manages the department interns, serves as mentor and advisor to the Associate Art Director and will assist on Martha Stewart Living as needed. Packaging design and branding experience a plus. Essential Job Functions 30% Story Concept Development: Works seamlessly across departments to plan and conceptualize stories. Communicates clearly and organizes the visual approach of each story. 30% Layout: Design, produce, and execute layouts per Design Director's vision. Maintain quality and consistent graphic design. Produce consistent charts and information graphics as required. 20% Photography Direction: Direct assigned photo shoots to ensure quality imagery for the magazine. Work with photo coordinator to assign and hire photographers for produced shoots. 15% Production Quality: Monitor and maintain all production deadlines for yourself within assigned departments. Adjust all page proofs as needed and be aware of all design standards. 5% Service: Executes all additional duties requested by Design Director.

  • Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience. Experience: Minimum of three to four years experience in publication design. Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Expertise in Graphic Design, typography and concept development. Packaging design and branding experience a plus. Strong computer skills including ability to work expertly in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator Experience with photo shoots and on-set art direction. Expertise in editorial design and continuity. Understanding of color correction/retouching process. Ability to maintain high quality standards under tight deadlines. Ability to communicate visual concepts to people who are not necessarily visually directed. Excellent interpersonal, communication and multi-tasking skills. % Travel Required (Approximate): 15% for location photo shoots and traveling to Real Weddings
