Milwaukee Magazine, an award-winning city magazine, is searching for a senior features editor to oversee the assigning and editing of profiles, reader service, investigative and long-form narrative journalism. The ideal candidate must be a wordsmith and critical thinker, willing to challenge conventional wisdom and prepared to take calculated, creative risks. This is a great opportunity for a bright, hard-working, enthusiastic idea generator who wants to join an award-winning, creative staff. Responsibilities: Assign and edit feature-length stories and profiles, including investigative stories and think pieces Top edit Insider, a front-of-book section focusing on news and current events Write two to three features annually, and write front- and back-of-book items as needed Take ownership of service-story packages, keeping them fresh and relevant Generate story ideas and leads Lead the magazine's investigative journalism efforts (our "Flashlight" unit takes after "Spotlight") Attend and help plan occasional live events to bring the magazine to life in the community Work with editor to recruit and develop freelance writers Work with editor and art director to conceptualize feature layouts Work with editor to determine the overall mix of the magazine, paying special attention to long-range planning Contribute to the magazine's website on a weekly basis

  • Job Requirements: A four-year degree in journalism, English, communications or a related field 5 years magazine editing experience preferred, but we’re open to candidates with less experience whose work demonstrates ability to excel in this role An editor’s eye for detail, style, tone and factual inconsistencies Excellent reporting skills A strong grasp of AP Style A working knowledge of Wisconsin and Milwaukee news and newsmakers preferred, or a demonstrated ability to learn the key issues and meet the key players quickly Familiarity with digital best practices
