Graphic Designer (Editorial/Print)

IndexUniverse, an international financial media company, is looking for a talented Graphic Designer (Editorial/Print) to join our team in San Francisco's, Financial District. You will be joining a small design team consisting of the Art Director/Design Manager in San Francisco, a Jr. Designer in Equator, and a Print Designer in Germany. One of your main focuses will be magazine & newsletter redesign, design and layout. You will be working directly with the Managing Editor on a monthly publication, and will be responsible for its design production including: concepting, design execution, and final production. In addition, you will participate in the design and layout of a variety of print work including: media kits, advertising, corporate collateral, conference materials (we have at least 6 scheduled for this year), white papers and other projects as they arise. We are a small team, and you must enjoy jumping in on a variety of projects as needed. Candidate Profile: • Minimum of 3 years post-college magazine design experience • Superior magazine design standards, and enthusiasm for innovative, creative storytelling • Experience designing and branding a magazine, and developing its style guide • Thorough knowledge of print production process for magazines. • Experience doing your own print production and creating files ready for sending directly to printer • Modern, sophisticated approach to typography and page design. Extraordinary typography skills are essential. • Exceptional understanding of grid systems, layout, composition, hierarchy, and color is required • Expert InDesign skills with understanding of baseline grids, consistency, and style sheets • Highly proficient in Photoshop and Illustrator • Experience working collaboratively with editors • The ability to take complex financial content and deliver it in a clear, concise and engaging manner • Meticulous attention to detail • Extremely organized • Deadline driven, able to multitask, and manage numerous projects simultaneously • Must be flexible in order to meet shifting priorities • Self-starter who can self-direct and work independently, as well as take direction and receive feedback in a positive manner • Information graphic experience a plus • Experience with finance a plus but not required Responsibilities: • Oversee all aspects of the design and production of a monthly publication • Collaborate with editor in designing artwork and concepts on a per issue basis • Translate financial concepts into visually appealing info-graphics • Responsible for your own print production and releasing files to the printer (we do not have a production team) • Work with printer as needed on production and printing • Participate in the design of media kits, advertising, corporate collateral, conference materials, white papers and other projects as they arise

You'll be expected to help with front-of-book page layout, print out and distribute manuscripts, update and manage the wall of current issue pages, create illustrations and infographics for various parts of the magazine, scan items for the design department, organize all tear sheets and help with award submissions.

As a key member of a three-person creative staff, the Art Director contributes to the overall look of this National Magazine Award-winning title, and is instrumental in designing features and FOB departments, in collaboration with the Design Director. This is a hands-on position involving all aspects of creating one of the nation's most visually sophisticated monthly magazines: conceptualizing and generating design approaches, assigning photography and illustration, directing photo shoots, creating infographics and charts, doing photo research, following layouts through all phases of production, overseeing color correction, and shipping files.
