Meet Kim Sall

Current job:
Graphic Designer for JPD Studio, a studio that specializes in website and logo design. We're currently working on websites and logos for: a jewelry designer, architect, illustrator, non-profit organization in Peru, track and field Olympic winner, and a nutritionist. We're at different stages of the design process for each client, which keeps things new and exciting.

What school did you go to, and what did you study?
I majored in Communications at DePauw University in Indiana, then I went to Pratt Institute in NYC to get a degree in Graphic Design.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I didn't know graphic design existed, but I always noticed and critiqued posters, billboards, signs, etc, even from a super early age. I wanted to be an interior designer and then an author during grade school. I always loved all of my art classes, but had no idea how to translate my love for art into a career.

How'd you get into magazine design?
Though I'm not currently working in the magazine world, I had an internship at The New Yorker and later freelanced at Vogue. My friend helped me get an internship with The New Yorker, and Vogue found me at the annual Senior Pratt Show, where my work was on display.

What made you get involved with the SPD Student Committee?
My Publication Design teacher at Pratt, Nancy Stamatopoulos, helped me get involved with SPD. I love helping out with their annual publication tours, educational events and parties. I've met so many talented and fun people through SPD.

Name a current favorite font, photographer or illustrator (or all 3!)

• Photographer: Wick Beavers
• Illustrator: Jeanine Henderson

What should students do now while in college to help prepare them for an editorial design career?
Network, network, network! And have the skills and talent to back up the networking.
