This Is Who We Are:

Liana Zamora

Today's featured Student Outreach Committee member is one of our original crew. Having helped create and run our first few years of Portfolio Review and Pub Crawl events, Liana Zamora has been an essential supply of help to the committee AND to you! She's also been a Student Competition judge, and a behind-the-scenes supporter of all our events. We don't even want to think where we would be without her, so read on and learn more about her after the jump.
Meet Liana Zamora
Current job:
Sports Illustrated, Deputy Art Director and Adjunct Professor at City College and NYU.

What school did you go to, and what did you study?
School of Visual Arts, studied Graphic Design

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a kid, I use to collect magazines, tear them apart and make collages. What I didn't realize was I made my own magazine.

How'd you get into magazine design?
I went on an interview at a magazine (which will remain nameless)... I walked in with my portfolio and placed it on the Creative Director's desk. The entire desk fell over!!! I was so embarrassed but needless to say, they never forgot me and called me for the job.

What made you get involved with the SPD Student Committee?
Besides the fact that I am a professor, I remember when I was looking for leads or internships when I was a student. It was difficult, but there were some amazing people who helped me. I want to be able to help others as people did for me.

What should students do now while in college to help prepare them for an editorial design career?
1. BE PREPARED: Create a website, business card, resume and an low-rez PDF of your work.
2. NETWORK: Go to SPD, TDC, ADC and/or MediaBistro parties, speaker series or try to volunteer with these organizations.
3. RESEARCH: Google the person/company you have a meeting with and find out a little about them so you have something to say in an email or meeting.
4. CONTACT: Always, send a thank you (hand-written) card and/or a "Nice To Meet You" email the day after you meet someone or have a meeting.
