New Work: Meet Inside Magazine

In the spirit of our New Work series over on the main site, and following up on our first featured student publication, we'd like to introduce you to Indiana University's Inside magazine. Art Director Larry Buchanan (a senior studying graphic design and journalism) shares the most recent issue of the Bloomington, Indiana, quarterly with us...

 
 

Inside is a themed magazine so we have four themes per year. Our first two themes were "The Home Issue" and "The Identity Issue." And now "The Free Issue." We had a few concepts for the cover. One was to have a naked college guy holding a sign that said "The Free Issue," but we ultimately decided to hand draw the entire cover and incorporate the naked college guy. All of the type on the cover was hand drawn by freshman Michael Buchanan. We wanted to create something that when students walk by, they had to pick it up. As our editor-in-chief Sarah Hutchins says in her editor's note, few words have as much clout as the word "free" on a college campus.

We interviewed a freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior for the "Welcome to Freedom" package to find out what freedom was to them at each level of college. We created a mock university seal, and kept the package clean and simple, with the great portraits by our photo editor Zach Hetrick.

For the "Nothing is Free" package, we wanted to set up a contrast between all of the bright colors/FREE starbursts and the "Nothing is free" headline to make the spread feel a bit ironic. We delve into where student money goes, the strings attached to a "free" ride, and the costs/benefits of living on campus vs. off.
