WORKING MAGAZINES: An Insider's Take on Making Magazines
PRESENTED BY: Dennis Huynh, Senior Associate Art Director, Entertainment Weekly
SCHOOL: Southern Adventist University
LEVEL: Senior
INSTRUCTORS:  Ed Guthero, Joe La Com

32 pages + 2 people รท 4 days = 1 magazine. That was the goal.

Back in early April I had the pleasure of presenting a magazine workshop to 15 students at Southern Adventist University in Chattanooga, Tenn. Paired into teams of 2 and 3 by their instructors, Ed Guthero and Joe La Com, the students were required to conceive of and create a newsstand-viable publication.

Our goal was to give the students a deeper understanding of the publishing business by throwing them into the deep end of the pool. And with that in mind, we spent the first part of the evening discussing various magazine-related topics--from organization (what is FOB, BOB, departments, and features), to column structure, style sheets, and how to find a job. Then we gave them a list of requirements for their projects--page counts, number of packages, number of infographics--and set them free. We really wanted to force the students to be decisive, manage their time effectively, and learn how to quickly express an idea visually and collaboratively.

Even though they were not required to photograph or illustrate every piece (crediting appropriately was required, of course), many of them took on that task with great success. Within four days every group had a magazine to its name. Check out the results of some of their work.
