Today we're shining the SPD-U Spotlight on Jessica Gray ... see her winning piece larger and get some details from Jessica after the jump.

SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery Show :: Work #4*
NAME:  Jessica Gray
SCHOOL:  Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta
2012-2013 STUDENT STATUS:  senior, graduating in 2013
INSTRUCTOR:  Elizabeth Mandel, Professor of Graphic Design

SPD-U: While our judges saw and judged all the entered work without any information about the pieces, we'd now love to hear what type of publication or project this piece was created for.
JESSICA:  This piece was created within my publication design class. The objective was to come up with a new magazine in any kind of area. I chose to create a magazine targeted towards edgy young women that wasn't just fashion or just beauty. It is a magazine that encompasses fashion, beauty, lifestyle and design for a woman that is interested in them all; and so I researched, and concepted and came up with the name Vie, which means "life" in French -- which relates to the all-encompassing subject matter for the edgier woman.

SPD-U: What's one of the biggest lessons you learned about editorial design from this project and any others you may have worked on?
JESSICA: I have learned a lot about working within the grid and breaking it to create more dynamic layouts.

SPD-U: What are you up to now? Are you currently or do you plan to pursue a career in editorial design of any kind?
JESSICA: I am a returning student and graduate in the fall. I am currently interning at Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) here in Atlanta, GA. I am not currently within the field of editorial design, but I do have a passion for it and would love to pursue it in the future.
