New Work: Meet Positive/Negative Magazine
In the spirit of our New Work series over on the main Grids blog, and following up on all the awesome work we saw in our SPD-U Spotlight Show, we're showcasing some great recent student publication design in our New Work: Student Publications series. If you want to submit YOUR school pub, look for details at the end of this post.
Today we'd like to introduce you to Rochester Institute of Technology's Positive/Negative magazine. Features Editor Emily Levine (a recent graphic design graduate who's now working in NYC) shares the most recent issue of the mag with us...
Positive/Negative Magazine is an art publication produced annually by the Editorial Design and Photography classes at the Rochester Institute of Technology's College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. Students in this collaborative course create the magazine content, which includes the articles, design, and photography. With the open-ended theme of Positive/Negative, students produce work with unhindered creativity.
The course is structured by a student-elected staff that guides teams of photographer-designer pairings through the creation of three different article projects. Each article is written by students with the only guideline being that each article should represent a positive or a negative theme. The sub-theme of the magazine this year is "superheros."
The magazine is put together in only 10 weeks after a thorough critique process and published in a limited number of copies. We also have an online/ipad version of the magazine that was coded entirely by students in the class.
