Kevin Brainard 

Kevin is a creative director, a designer, an educator, and the principal of Pleasure--a design consultancy with a diverse group of clients including the branding, publishing, and entertainment industries. 

In his career, Kevin has served as the senior design director of the experiential design firm Collins, the deputy design director of Martha Stewart Living, an art director at Harper Collins Publishers and Artisan Books, as well as the senior designer at Spot Design (SpotCo).

His work has been recognized by AIGA 365 and 50 Books/50 Covers; the American Center for Design; Art Directors Club; American Illustration; Communication Arts; Émigré; Graphis; Metropolis; New York Book Show; Print; Society of Publication Designers, Type Directors Club; and was included in ADC Young Guns 2.

Books featuring his work include Becoming a Graphic Designer: A Guide to Careers in Design; Graphic Design Solutions; Handwritten: Expressive Lettering in the Digital Age; I Love Type, Franklin Gothic; The Language of Graphic Design; Letterforms: Bawdy, Bad, and Beautiful; New Vintage Type; Sight for Sound; and the forthcoming New Modernist Type by Steven Heller & Gail Anderson.

Kevin teaches Graphic Design Portfolio at the School of Visual Arts and Experimental Typography at Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City.

SPD:  What are you currently working on?
KEVIN:  1) I'm currently in the midst of two magazine redesigns.  2) I'm also designing the book for "40 Days of Dating" with Timothy Goodman & Jessica Walsh. The publication will be a documentation and extension of the blog fortydaysofdating.com and will be published by Abrams in 2014.  3) I teach Basic Typography and Senior Graphic Design Portfolio at the School of Visual Arts and Experimental Typography at Parsons, The New School for Design.

SPD:  When you have creative block, what do you do?
KEVIN:  Something else. Take a walk with my dogs. Go to a movie. Experience life.
