CREATIVE SYNERGY PANELIST SPOTLIGHT

Ann de Saussure Davidson

Ann is a director of still photography, specializing in lifestyle brands. She has been Photography Director of the magazines Fortune Small Business and HGTV Magazine. Prior to that, she was Photo Director at Time Inc's Content Solutions Division where they created websites and magazines for brands such as Chase, Ford, Unilever, Gillette, Bank of America and the National Parks Foundation. Since May, Ann has been Photo Director of the newly launched retail website rodales.com, which specializes in organic and sustainable products marketed primarily to women.

She finished a BA in creative writing and politics at Clemson before coming to New York to work in magazines. She fell in love with picture editing through her first job at Entertainment Weekly and never looked back.

SPD:  What is your favorite inspirational site?
ANN:  My best work inspiration site is trunkarchive.com

SPD:  What are you currently working on?
ANN:  At Rodales.com, I conceptualize and direct photo shoots to "Romance" our products and entice visitors to the site with the hopes that they'll spend money and come back. I lead a team that styles and shoots pictures. I'm always looking for creative ways to shoot clothing and housewares with a limited budget, keeping our customer's lifestyle and the site's ethos in mind. Since we are only 6 months old, the brand is still evolving, and it's my job to try to translate the brand identity into images that showcase our merchandise.

SPD:  When you have creative block, what do you do?
ANN:  When I have creative block, I buy a stack of magazines and rip out pages with things that inspire me, or I go on websites of photography reps and scroll through stylist and photographer portfolios.
