New Work: Meet Backdrop Magazine

New Work: Meet Backdrop Magazine
In the spirit of our New Work series over on the main Grids blog, and following up on all the awesome work we saw in our SPD-U Spotlight Show, we're showcasing some great recent student publication design in our New Work: Student Publications series. If you want to submit YOUR school pub, look for details at the end of this post.

Today we'd like to introduce you to Ohio University's Backdrop magazine. Design Director Emilee Kraus (a senior) shares a recent issue of the mag with us...

Backdrop is an entirely student-produced lifestyle magazine located in the college town of Athens, Ohio. Founded in 2006, it is an outlet for Ohio University students' perspective on issues including politics, sex and health, entertainment and culture with regard to the university and its surroundings.

Backdrop's staff is entirely student-based and accepts contributions from all students on campus. Students are given the opportunity to gain real-world experience as they take part in the writing, editing, advertising, and producing of a real four-color glossy magazine.

Readers are primarily students who take an interest in their peers and community. Backdrop provides student reviews of local restaurants, events, and bands, as well as keep a critical eye on the happenings around Athens. The magazine is published twice a semester, and has a shelf life of several months. We are now in our seventh year of publication.

Think your college pub is doing some awesome design? Then send us samples and tell us the backstory. Magazines, yearbooks, newspapers, zines, literary journals, newsletters ... whatever you've got, we want to see it and hear about it! Please reduce your layouts to no larger than 1200 pixels wide and don't forget to include all relevant credits and a little background. We prefer submissions that have been published within the past year. Check out past entries for examples here. Send submissions to
