The SPD-U Spotlight Shines on Allen Chiu

The SPD-U Spotlight Shines on Allen Chiu
This week we're continuing to showcase the second half of our 9 Gold Medal winners from our SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery ShowOur super-amazing team of judges had an extremely difficult job choosing the winning work, so thanks to all of you who entered and congrats on all the great work you're doing!

We'll be featuring one Gold Medal winner a day -- in RANDOM order, they are all equal winners -- until we show all 9, then we'll showcase our Silver Medal winners next Monday. And that's not it! Because the work was so strong, we also have a 3rd category of Merit Winners, which we'll reveal next Tuesday, on our SPD-U Tumblr page. So be sure to keep checking back in with us to see all the awesome work.

Today we're shining the SPD-U Spotlight on Allen "Schoolboy" Chiu ... see his winning piece larger and get some details from Allen after the jump.

SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery Show :: Gold Medal Winner #F*
NAME:  Allen "Schoolboy" Chiu
SCHOOL:  Syracuse University
INSTRUCTOR:  Jeff Glendenning

SPD-U: While our judges saw and judged all the entered work without any information about the pieces, we'd now love to hear what type of publication or project this piece was created for.
ALLEN:  This was a class assignment where we had to create a couple pages from a lifestyle magazine of our choice. Mine was a luxury magazine for wealthy people.

SPD-U: What's one of the biggest lessons you learned about editorial design from this project and any others you may have worked on?
ALLEN: I honestly don't know enough about editorial design to be in a position where I'm giving tips and tricks to people, but something I've found useful just in art-life is taking a bunch of pictures, especially when something cool happens. During spring break, I had to take pictures of this kid who is actually a Saudi Arabian prince for an unrelated project, and since I'm indecisive, I ended up doing a variety of shots, some of which I later realized I could use for this magazine. In fact, pretty much all the photos used in this project were pulled from this archive of photos from various projects/life events which I have been keeping for the last 4 years. Hit me up if you ever need some royalty-free stock.

SPD-U: What are you up to now? Are you currently or do you plan to pursue a career in editorial design of any kind?
ALLEN: I'm currently in Los Angeles for the summer doing test shoots and interning at The Refinery (they basically make movie posters). I'm definitely open to a career in editorial design if it's under good direction and I like where the magazine is going.
