The SPD-U Spotlight Shines on Adam Lowe
Today we're so excited to showcase the first of 9 awesome Gold Medal winning pieces today from our SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery ShowOur incredible team of judges had an extremely difficult job choosing the winning work ... and in fact, the quality was so strong, we have 3 categories of winners! Much like the SPD professional competition does each year, we're awarding Gold Medals, Silver Medals and Merit Winners. So thanks to all of you who entered and congrats on all the great work you're doing!!

We'll be featuring one Gold Medal winner a day -- in RANDOM order, they are all equal winners -- until we show all 9, then we'll showcase our Silver Medal winners. After that we'll reveal our Merit Winners on our SPD-U Tumblr page. So be sure to keep checking back in with us to see all the terrific work.

Today we're shining the SPD-U Spotlight on Adam Lowe ... see his winning piece larger and get some details from Adam after the jump.

SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery Show :: Gold Medal Winner A*
NAME:  Adam Lowe
SCHOOL:  Rutgers University
INSTRUCTOR:  Gerry Beegan

SPD-U: While our judges saw and judged all the entered work without any information about the pieces, we'd now love to hear what type of publication or project this piece was created for.
ADAM:  I designed this layout for Trim Magazine, a Rutgers University fashion, culture, and lifestyle publication where I am Co-Editor in Chief and Design Director. We are completely student-run and have a great team that spends the extra time needed to create a quality magazine!

SPD-U: What's one of the biggest lessons you learned about editorial design from this project and any others you may have worked on?
ADAM: An issue that I've had in the past is not letting myself have enough fun with layouts.  With this project, I definitely became more illustrative and tested different ways for the type to interact with the elements in the photograph.

SPD-U: What are you up to now? Are you currently or do you plan to pursue a career in editorial design of any kind?
ADAM: I'm heading into my senior year of college and have been interning for the Longform team at Sports Illustrated. (Shameless Plug: you should check out our site here.) Working in a web department has been a great change since my past internships have all consisted of print editorial. As for pursuing a career in editorial design, all I can say is because the publication industry has given me such great experiences in both print and digital media, it has allowed me to keep my options open.
