Attending CMA's NYC15 Convention March 12/13? SPD-U Will Be There Too! Once again, SPD-U is teaming up with the College Media Association at their annual spring national convention -- NYC15. We've got 9 talented speakers presenting 6 different sessions on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 AND we're judging and presenting a special design category in the Apple Awards.

If you're attending with your school's publication staff, be sure to come to our sessions (time and room details after the jump) and come visit our booth in the registration ballroom to say hi and get a chance at winning a set of SPD annuals! And don't forget to enter your design work in our special Design Category (#18) of the Apple Awards.

Apple Awards - #18 NYC15 Design Contest
Whether you work on your yearbook, newspaper, magazine or online, we want to see your best design work! Submit a cover, a single page or spread layout, an ad, a screengrab of your online/digital layout, or even an image of an infographic, chart or special graphic illustration you made. We're judging only the design, so make sure it's extra-awesome! Winning work will not only win an Apple Award, but will also be displayed on the SPD.org website.

Get an insider's view of what goes on behind the scenes in creating and matching eye-catching and provocative photos to magazine and online stories. From story memo to published piece, you'll hear elements of the brainstorming process, fun behind-the-scenes photo shoot stories, and you'll see some of the images that ended up in the trash after the final edit. Walk away after learning how you can enhance your photography or better complement your publication's design with the perfect image!

Conceptual Typography
There's a world of typography out there, and it's not on the computer. Use scrap metal or rose petals to create unique typographic solutions. Freeze wooden type in an ice block. Reconstruct letterforms and use handwriting. Learn how to these techniques -- and others like them -- to liven up your design.
