2015 SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery Show :: Gold Medal Winner*
NAME: Allen Chiu
SCHOOL: Syracuse University
CURREN STUDENT LEVEL: Rising senior, graduating spring of 2016
INSTRUCTOR: Jeff Glendenning
SPD-U: While our judges saw and judged all the entered work without any information about the pieces, we'd now love to hear what type of publication or project this piece was created for, and what your process was.
ALLEN: I shot these water diptychs for my friend Simon's magazine project and then I kinda just designed this layout. Simon and I collaborate on a lot of projects. We also made both typefaces used on the spread!
SPD-U: You were also an SPD-U Spotligth Gold Medal Winner last year. Did you learn anything new about editorial design from this project that other students might benefit from?
ALLEN: I guess I like to try new things, so design-wise I was kinda conquering a different empire this year. I definitely acquired an arsenal of editorial design tools from old conquests, and that helped, but like this year I had to adapt... figure out some new tactics, if that makes sense. Though I've had a lot of personal growth stemming from my mistakes last year. Just become more positive in general.
SPD-U: What's your major/course of study? Do you do any extracurricular design-related activities?
ALLEN: I'm at Syracuse studying Communications Design. As for extracurriculars... there's too many! The dopest thing I currently have going on, I'd say, is my type foundry I started with Simon. I was really trying to get our type foundry's site done for this so I could put in a plug here, but unfortunately it's still not quite ready to share. If anyone's interested in throwing me the Instagram follow though, I'll make a post about it when it's up. It's going to be sick. Other than that I'd say I keep myself busy with a lot of photography as well.
SPD-U: What are you up to now? Do you plan to pursue a career in editorial design of any kind?
ALLEN: I am currently interning at New York Magazine, and earlier this summer I was kind of exploring the world of fashion at KiDS Creative. Editorial would be sick, but I'm also open to doing other things. I realized I really like learning. Like I remember last year, I randomly tweeted 'I love learning' one day. And that's because, I really love learning (haha). So I end up trying all these different things and everything's fun so I can never seem to settle on anything.
Congrats to Allen! And come back tomorrow to see the next Gold-Medal-winning piece.
