Internship Insight: Syracuse U's Communications Design Students While those of you attending school in NYC or other major cities have more opportunities to pursue internships year-round, there's all the rest of you who have to rely heavily on your summer months to gain real world experience. At Syracuse University, for example, the Communications Design students have come to realize that they need to make the most of their May-August, and many of them got awesome internships this past summer around the country and world.

From magazine internships at top NYC publishers to a design firm in Spain to self publishing with friends, here's a glimpse at what your fellow students were up to a few months back (and maybe it'll give you ideas for your own internship/project plans for next summer!)...

RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the art department intern, I worked under Seventeen's creative and design directors on page layouts, mood boards, illustrations, and photo shoots.

RESPONSIBILITIES
: I worked as the art intern for Martha Stewart Living Magazine. I designed pages for the magazine, created web templates for DIY projects, sat in on various meetings, assisted in photoshoots, and ate the food that was left over from the photoshoots.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
I was the design & illustration intern. I worked on whatever was handed to me, from the smallest illustrations in the gutters to eventually helping design a feature. 
PHOTO CAPTION: This photo was taken at the "Businessweek's Got Talent" talent show, where I drew 15-second "portraits" of the entire design staff.

I worked as the design intern, doing whatever was handed to me. I fixed a magazine for a international law firm, designed one of the packages for a new perfume brand called Olfactory, and prepared presentations for clients. I also went to Mallorca to help design & arrange a pop-up event called August.

This project was self-initiated and produced with friends and colleagues over the course of 12 weeks. I handled the selection of content, design, and photography work for the publication.
