But what about the photos? Where do I get them?

The imagery for your competition entry can come from a number of sources.

If you enter in the Entertainment Category, you have to create you own photography or illustrations. So ideally, you or a photographer friend could shoot photos specifically for your design (check out Luke Shuman's 2011 winning entry and Paul Johnson's 2008 winning entry who both did just that).

Or perhaps you could illustrate it or create a photo-collage or photo-illlustration ... sometimes those options can offer more creative opportunities than just a photo. 2011's winning entry by Melanie Teppich used a photo-illustration, and Raul Aguila's 3rd-place entry (scroll to the bottom of that link) also used illustration.

For all the categories other than Entertainment, original photography and illustration is encouraged as well. But you could also search for cheap images on microstock photo sites such as istockphoto, Veer's Marketplace, and Shutterstock. (There are many others as well.) There's even some free stock photo sites, one being stock.xchng. Most of the microstock sites let you buy low-resolution images for just a few bucks, and low-res is okay for our purposes as long as it prints out well on your printer. (No blurry, fuzzy or pixellated images please ... while that won't instantly disqualify you, it definitely puts your entry at a disadvantage.)

Whether you use one of the above options or you find images elsewhere that you want to use, you MUST include credits on your layouts. Typically that is a photographer name, but sometimes it may be the agency/source you got it from, or it may be the specific web address where you found it.

You can put this credit information in the margins near the gutter, or you could put it in small type elsewhere on your spread ... check out how professional magazines do this to get some ideas. You could also list the photographer's name as a byline like the story author.

No matter where your images come from, the source info must be included. And remember that this info should be considered a design element and not just a requirement. These are things that designers have to deal with everyday in the real world, so we want to see how you could handle it too.

Still have more questions on this or another topic?
Ahh, the wonders of dummy text.

No, you most certainly do not have to write the body copy ... you just need something to flow in there and fill the space for your design's purposes. We recommend using Lorem Ipsum (defined here; also see our tip here on using InDesign to generate it). But you can use any copy you have on hand. It's not about the story, it's about how you design it.

Of course, you will need to use the headline, subhead and byline that we provide for you in the category descriptions (get the official 2012 rules here).

As for other display copy (sidebar headlines, captions, etc), it doesn't need to be brilliantly written, but it should go along with your story or image. For example, if you have a caption for a photo of Taylor Swift, then make sure her name is in the caption, even if the rest of the caption is dummy text. Or if you have a sidebar, make sure the sidebar headline corresponds to your story. These items don't need to be anything more than labels, but they do need to help us understand your intention for their purpose in your layout.

Find all the details about our 2012 Student Design Competition here.

Q&A is a recurring series on the SPD Student Blog. I chose "How To Gut A Fish" with the intention of making this gruesome topic seem more appealing & approachable. The topic may seem unconventional, but I love to fish on the lake at home and I had always been curious to learn the proper gutting method! It took some research, but the what I learned helped me imagine the visuals for this project.

What was the biggest challenge in creating your entry?
My biggest challenge with this topic was to steer away from making it gross. It was very tempting to show the process using images, but I chose to illustrate the steps instead to avoid disgusting my audience.

Any advice for students entering next year's competition?
My best advice would be to take a risk with your topic! Don't go with the first thing that comes to mind - a good concept takes some research. Also, find a good teacher that will help push your boundaries!

What magazines do you turn to most for design inspiration?
I am a huge fan of Fortune magazine. Its design is innovative yet subtle - a perfect match for their audience. I also love flipping through Elephant, Interview, and GOOD.

Did you participate in any publication- or design-related campus activities while in school? Or have any design-related jobs?
At the Rochester Institute of Technology, I designed for the weekly school magazine Reporter. The magazine is entirely student run, written, illustrated, photographed, and designed. That experience was invaluable - it taught me a lot about the editorial process. I was also co-Design Director (along with the charming Jackie Donner) for Positive Negative, a 100+ page collaborative magazine between Photo and Design students at RIT.

For your prize internship, where did you intern? What was your favorite part of it?
My internship at Inc. Magazine was a life changing experience! I got the chance to work with such a diverse group of talented people and I was truly inspired by the creative team. The best part of the job (besides the beautiful office, pizza parties, and 10am start time) was being able to make contributions to the magazine. Seeing my work in print & online and imagining people around the country looking at it still gives me chills!!!

What are you up to now?
I currently work as a designer at Fast Company magazine in New York.

Find more of Claire's work on her website: www.claire-eckstrom.com

++++++++++++++

Wanna know how you can enter the 2012 competition to win money, cash and an internship like Claire? Click here for all the details. And comment below if you have any questions.

LEVEL: Senior
INSTRUCTOR: Mary Mahan
CATEGORY: Entertainment Profile

What was your inspiration in creating your entry?
My approach was pretty pragmatic. I didn't have time to illustrate, so I picked the person I could most comfortably shoot interesting photos of, and let her drive the whole thing. I mean, she wears birds in her hair regularly, so my work was done when she agreed to it (she even typed her birds' names into InDesign for me...). I guess that makes her the inspiration, huh? She made it easy. Come to think of it, I probably owe her something, like Platon's napkin I stole at the gala... Just kidding.
(EDITOR'S NOTE: Did we mention part of the prize for all winners is getting to attend our annual awards gala where you can meet and mingle with tons of awesome magazine designers, art directors, illustrators and photographers, just like Luke did?)

What was the biggest challenge in creating your entry?
I'm tempted to give a student's complaint about finding time on top of schoolwork but let's be real here... Never will you have more time to design two spreads completely independently, so that's hardly a "challenge." (EDITOR'S NOTE: He's right!!!)

Any advice for students entering this next competition?
Spend time creating solid imagery, and the layout will take care of itself. In my case, I really didn't even have to consider the concept or content--just twisted my photos into a competition category. The contest is such that you can do whatever you want visually without needing to please anyone content-wise. And again, with almost no time constraints... The spreads should be pretty dope, right?

What magazines do you turn to most for design inspiration?
Wired's design used to be the only reason I would pick up a magazine. And then I fell hard for the editorial world (I blame Tim Leong) when I had the unbelievable chance to intern there. These days my life is riddled with stacks of Field and Stream, Bloomberg Businessweek, GQ, Time, Fortune, and More... (see what I did there??)

Do you participate in any publication- or design-related campus activities while in school? Or have any design-related jobs?
I was on a team of designers that created materials for events, interned in the school's marketing department, and was art director of the campus newspaper (until I burned out trying to do all the layout and illustrate simultaneously).

For your prize internship, where did you intern? What was your favorite part of it?
Sports Illustrated. Best part was realizing that everything was happening right there around me. And that if I wanted to talk to someone designing magazines, I probably could. And did many times. Classic NYC awakening I suppose. Got to meet a lot of great people doing cool things.

What are you up to now?
I am back at my alma mater until May--designing marketing materials and art directing a magazine for prospective students, doing freelance branding and illustration on the side.

Find more of Luke's work on his website: www.lukeshuman.com

++++++++++++++

Wanna know how you can enter the 2012 competition to win money, cash and an internship like Luke? Click here for all the details. And comment below if you have any questions.
