Conde Nast: All Fire'd Up

Conde Nast: All Fire'd Up

One week after its launch, the Kindle Fire is proving to be a platform for publishers that rivals Apple's iPad. The industry is estimating 4-5 million devices to be sold this holiday season. Its smaller screen and 16:9 proportions does have its challenges for those reformatting magazine pages to the tablet screen, but the size of the potential audience is considerble.

In sync with the launch last week, Conde Nast debuted on Amazon's Newsstand with nine titles -- Allure, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Wired, Conde Nast Traveler, GQ, Golf Digest, The New Yorker, and Self (above). We spoke to Scott Dadich, Vice President of Digital Magazine Development, about the process.

Scott Dadich on POWER Platon for iPad

What is a book on the iPad? It's a question that's being answered in many different ways (See: Al Gore's Our Choice, William Joyce's The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, Above & Beyond: George Steinmetz, and even SPD 45). Scott Dadich is answering that question now with POWER Platon -- a coffee table book and now iPad app featuring arresting images of world leaders shot and narrated by the photographer. Here, Scott shares his insight into creating POWER for the iPad.… MORE

"Above & Beyond" The Traditional iPad Publication App

Above and Beyond app icon.pngThe last two weeks have seen the release of three high profile non-traditional publication apps for the iPad: Al Gore's Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis, The Final Hours of Portal 2, and now Above & Beyond: George Steinmetz--the latter two coming out of Joe Zeff Design's shop in Montclair, NJ.

Above & Beyond is part magazine, part hardcover photography collection, part website and part documentary. The app allows you to view Steinmetz aerial photography, hear how each photo came to be, and learn about George's motorized paraglider through video and an interactive 3D model.

With the release of this new app, I asked app creator Joe Zeff to answer three questions:

Three Questions For Grant Glas, Principal, Invisions Technical Arts

Even if you have only been half following along with SPD over the past year you have probably noticed that a fellow named Grant Glas has a lot to say about iPads. Three Question Interview with Chris Rochelle, Photographer, CHOW.com

JL: You recently photographed a series of Christmas food images for CHOW.com entirely on Kodachrome film in homage to the medium which is being dealt its final death blow as the last processor of the film stock in the world, Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, Kansas, ceases to support its development on December 23rd. What was that experience like? Had you shot in Kodachrome before?MORE

Three Questions with Tim J Luddy, CD, Mother Jones

Mother Jones makes great use of illustration within its pages. Is this an artistic choice on your end, or the by-product of working with a tight budget?
TJL: We decide on whether to use illustration, photography, or a combination of the two on the basis of which medium will present each story's message most effectively. We appreciate the way that editorial illustration can present and shape ideas, and we have a tradition of strength in that area, going back to
