It's not so black and white. Up until the mid-80s, design was a response to a problem. The relationship between pop culture (art) and commercialism (design) has changed; Outside of the fringe partyers like Warhol, it used to be taboo to associate the two, and now it's status quo (see Hirst or Murakami). Gail, Thanks for your post, I am a recently laid of photo editor (magazine folded) and I have been thinking about a change myself. But here lies the problem...- how do i apply my skills as a photo editor to something else rather than working for a magazine? (i have no interest in researching images for some online news site...) I feel like it is easier for art directors to find "a life after magazines" where you can still do a somewhat similar job. Any former photo editors would like to comment?...
