No, this is something more artful and beautiful...art engraved on paper. The book is called The Complete Engraver by Nancy Sharon Collins....

More after the jump...

But each time we get our new issue, we're flipping pages to find the meditative still-life series that photographer Nacho Alegre tucks into each one.
On New Year's Day the great postmodernist photographer Jan Groover passed away at the age of 68 in her home in Montpon-Ménestérol, France. She had moved there in 1991 from New York, where she taught at SUNY Purchase--my alma mater. Jan had moved to France by the time I arrived, but while in New York the master would still drop by the occasional class to critique students' work--an experience no young photographer could forget. It wasn't just that Jan was an intimidating talent. She was just plain intimidating. During a crit she was brash, confrontational, and brutally honest. She was quick to call bullshit on any student who dared suggest there was more to their pictures than the viewer might at first see. A typical response was often: "if it ain't in the picture...then it ain't in the picture."

Pacing the wall where pictures hung lay waiting for her assault, Jan had an ability to look through the pretentions of art school students and find something true, something honest. Her methods were often harsh but effective and it was the rare student who came away without a lasting impression and one or two mental scars. One notable pupil, Gregory Crewdson, whose best-known work creates dark fictional narratives in suburban settings, clearly listened to Jan's insistence on putting everything in the picture, producing photographs on the scale of cinematic productions--with lighting, set design, casting, etc. He'd take over entire homes, even neighborhood blocks, accounting for every minute detail.

But Jan's legacy is about more than teaching others. I have long held Jan in the highest regard as a postmodern pioneer of not only still-life photography but fine art photography in general. At a time in the seventies when photography still struggled to find its footing in the fine art world, one of Jan's photographs, a still-life, made the cover of Artforum Magazine. By photographing classical still-life subject matter such as fruit, vegetables, bottles, and kitchen utensils (and later, landscapes) Jan drew comparisons to master painters such as Cezanne and Morandi. She applied this impressionistic, romantic painterly style to her pictures and brazenly, elegantly insisted that a photograph must be considered as serious as any fine art painting. It's easy to see her influence in today's fine art photography. As always, it's all right there, in her pictures.

Justin O'Neill, Photo Editor, GQ

Images courtesy of Janet Borden, Inc.

Janet Borden gallery currently has a show of Jan's work up now until March 17th, entitled "Jan Groover: Formalism is Everything"

Combining three of my many passions this afternoon, collectible mag design-tchotchke searches online, rearranging the library in my home studio and browsing Amazon.com for retardedly expensive art books to add to my untouched wish list, I was delighted and inspired by a discovery while reviewing Monocle magazine online, the fairly newish global affairs book-a-zine edited by Tyler Brule, former genius of our old design-freak mag Wallpaper with the tasty dessert last name [note: I would've included the umlats or accents or whatever that his name requires if I only knew how to operate a keyboard properly.] If you have not picked the magazine up oh, GO ON. It's very, very pretty. Classy, smart, connected...likely to fold in a minute, DOH! But satisfyingly underdesigned, no pyrotechnics, just lovely & simple.
Anyway: my discovery. I say mine because I found it. Perhaps I'm the hundredth today, but the discovery is all mine, at this moment. What are you going about Andrea? Well right. It's a shop! A Monocle shop! So what? What do you MEAN so what? It's a pop-up store curated entirely by the Monocle fairies with what looks like clothing, stationary, accessories and other minimalist-designer-fetishist-fashion whore novelties lovingly laid out for some boob like me to browse thru and lust over. The reason for my post is simply to point to a trend likely to continue but one I think is something to factor in when us Creatives are asked to attend yet another top-level "ideas" meeting. The boss is under pressure to conceive of yet another revenue-garnering product that your already over-worked design team just may have to work a billion hours on. Suggest a store! An onlline store is one thing, several of our zines already have one but usually we're hawking stuff we endorse: Monocle designs their own stuff. A book edition I'm already dying to purchase... they've launched a 3-D pop-up store (temporary by nature) that's clearly a clever way to rob the public and run away fast. Monocle Shop, when it arrives in NYC (already up in London and Brentwood CA) which is rumored to be imminent, can expect a little visit from THIS fan at any rate. It's got all the men's design-y stuff that GQ shills but with a darling little M for Monocle logo I find irresistible.
