Design Intern, Los Angeles Magazine

Job Description: Los Angeles magazine is seeking a Design Intern to assist our art department in developing our monthly city regional magazine. Interns will receive hands-on experience with current software, creating and contributing to developing editorial layouts, while developing an appreciation for design aesthetics and conceptual design. Interns will take part in staff meetings and discussions regarding current and future issue content. Examples of daily tasks include; layout design, photo-editing and retouching, illustration, typography, and photo research, and organization projects. Occasionally there will be design needed for social media platforms. If permitting interns will be given the opportunity to attend photo shoots as well. This is an unpaid internship but can receive school credit if needed. There will be free parking. Intern will work a max of 20 hours a week.

  • Currently enrolled in school. 
  • Self-motivated, creative, and enthusiastic about design.
  • Proficient in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Design Director, Austin Monthly

Job Description: Concept, produce and design all covers, features and miscellaneous department-specific collateral for Austin Monthly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Employed full-time as Design Director of Austin Monthly and acting as supervisor of art staff. Works directly with Publisher, Editor-in-Chief and other editors on department, feature and cover design.
  • Assign all illustration, hiring local and national artists within a predetermined budget. Approve all photography assigned by Photo Director.
  • Approve and assist in all layouts done by Art Director and Ad Designer.
  • Assist with materials for sales team (media kits, event branding, digital promotions).
  • Work on a redesign of Austin Monthly in 2018.
  • Work directly with printer on preflight, uploads and press checks.

ABILITIES

  • Bring innovative ideas and designs to the table for fresh, unique magazine issues.
  • Prioritize work load and communicate well to team of art department and other departments for effective accomplishment of goals.
  • Collaborate to accomplish task of taking excellent art to print; detailed and meticulous.
  • Work independently and within team to maximize talents; great work ethic.

Freelance Editorial Designer, Vanity Fair

Job Description: Vanity Fair’s art department will be redesigning sections of the magazine in the upcoming months. Looking for a freelancer(s) to start as soon as possible. This position is full-time and cannot work remotely.

We are in need of someone to simultaneously help with the workload of the current monthly issue, but also be able to experiment on layouts for future issues. Applicants should be knowledgeable and interested in the Vanity Fair brand, with a passion for journalism and storytelling. 

Job Requirements:

  • 5+ years of editorial design experience
  • Excellent type and design sensibilities
  • Proficient in InDesign and K4; knowledgeable of Photoshop, Illustrator a plus
  • Strong time-management skills: projects across the VF brand present themselves weekly (events, marketing, web)
