Announcing our 2019 Student Competition Winners!

 

After a great day of judging in March, we've picked our top winners in our 2019 Student Design Competition! We'll be announcing them all week long and updating the list here each day.

This year's competition was our 21st annual student competition. Our panel of judges had a difficult decision making their picks from all the great work submitted, but after multiple rounds of judging, they selected first, second and third-place winners as well as three runners-up plus some noteworthy entries. Click their names below to see their winning work.

First Place and Recipient of the Mitch Shostak Award*
Gabriela Pesqueira

*Who's Mitch Shostak?
Our top prize is given to honor Mitch Shostak, a dear and dedicated friend of SPD who passed away on June 25, 2014. The former SPD board member had worked at numerous publications before opening Shostak Studios in 1993 where he continued to produce volumes of work for a number of clients. Mitch was widely respected as one of the country's leading publication designers. Committed and passionate in his teaching at the School of Visual Arts and mentoring in his own design studio, Mitch inspired his peers as well as many new generations of designers and art directors. We dedicate our top Student Design Competition prize to him in remembrance of his life and work. 


Second Place and Recipient of the B.W. Honeycutt Award*
Elise Garcia

School: University of North Texas

*Who's B.W. Honeycutt?
The second-place prize is our B.W. Honeycutt Award, given to honor the life and work of Bruce W. Honeycutt who died on January 12, 1994 at the age of 40. As the former Art Director of Details magazine, his redesign helped it earn accolades such as "Magazine of the Year" from Advertising Age and "Top Hottest Magazine" from Adweek. Honeycutt's work has been recognized by SPD, AIGA, and the Art Directors Club of New York amongst others. He taught publication design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and attended North Carolina University at Chapel Hill.

SPD must receive all student entries, completed entry forms, and payment receipts by Monday, March 18th at 5:00PM EST.

ENTRY FEES
SPD Student Members get their first 3 entries FREE! (Though student members can enter more than that...if you do, any additional entries will cost $10 each.) Please note: Even though they're free, you must register your 3 free member entries HERE.

If you're not a member but would like to join, you can purchase your SPD Student Membership and register for your 3 free member entries at the same time HERE.

Otherwise, each entry is $10.

You can pay your entry fees online HERE. If you're mailing in payment, please complete the payment form and send in cash or a check made payable to "The Society of Publication Designers".

YOU MUST INCLUDE THE RECEIPT WITH YOUR ENTRY. If we cannot find proof of payment or a valid SPD Student Membership, your entries may be disqualified.

PRIZES
The first, second, and third place winners will be honored with a cash prize, an invitation to the Society of Publication Designers' Annual Awards Gala in May 2019 in New York City, and a cash prize. The top 3 winners will also be offered a summer internship at a major magazine or design studio in New York City and free summer housing provided by the School of Visual Arts. (Note: although non-US citizens will be eligible to win, due to visa restrictions only US citizens will be eligible for the internship part of the prize.)

First Place and Recipient of the Mitch Shostak Award: $2,500
Second Place and Recipient of the B.W. Honeycutt Award: $1,000
Third Place: $500

We're excited to wrap up our announcement of our 2018 Student Design Competition winners today with our 1st-place winner Kori Webb! (Check out 3rd place here, and 2nd place here).

The winners were announced at the 53rd Annual SPD Awards Gala earlier in May. Along with an invitation to the Gala, as our top winner, Kori's prizes include $2,500, an internship at an NYC magazine, and inclusion in our Pub 53 SPD Annual. 

Congrats to Kori and all our winners! Thanks to everyone who entered and made our judges' decision a tough one...we loved looking at your work and commend you all on your great pieces.
