Job Description: The Art Director is responsible for effectively completing complex design projects, including the layout of 6 print issues a year from initial design to print mechanicals, as well as digital initiatives such as website features, email, and marketing promotions.

This role reports to the Creative Director, while working closely with the Photo Director and Editor-in-Chief.

Responsibilities include:
+ Design and production of our flagship publication, Dwell Magazine
+ Help creating innovative layouts, including covers and features, and setting style standards
+ Support creative team developing assets, improving workflow, and meeting goals
+ Oversee the commission of original artwork (including illustrations, icons, and animations) within budgets
+ Strengthen and grow the Dwell brand and visual identity
+ Help evolve a cohesive identity for Dwell.com and social media content franchises (including page templates, photo/illustration treatments, and other defining graphic elements)
+ Propose and iterate on design concepts for print and digital as needed
+ Participates in brainstorming and other idea-generating team sessions

Job Requirements:

  • Experience creating layouts for design-centric, visual print publications and building design systems

  • Understanding of complex type hierarchies and systems

  • Understanding of corporate branding, layout, color, and typography in both print and digital media

  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
