Job Description: Science’s Visual Department is seeking a Senior Designer to join its award-winning team.

The Senior Designer position exists to create layouts for and maintain the visual aesthetic of Science magazine. They work as a project manager to coordinate all the visual assets in print and online. They work closely with all departments of Science and Publishing (Editors, Copyeditors, Writers, Proofreaders, Photo editors, illustrators/graphics editors, Operations) and researchers outside of Science to combine the text and visual assets into an engaging and informative package. They also work with the Web Content Strategy team to publish and promote this content on the website and social media. The Senior Designer art directs freelance and in-house illustrators, and designs sections of the magazine.

What You’ll Do

  • Designing and project managing a variety of sections throughout Science magazine

  • Art directing conceptual and scientific illustrations for a variety of different sections

  • Giving feedback on the work of others on the Visuals team to maintain the Science style

  • Maintaining asset permissions and maneuvering the publishing platform (vjoon K4), along with other small administrative tasks

  • Commissioning outside vendors such as freelance illustrators, and licensing photography.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Requirements

  • Five years’ experience in magazine publishing design

  • A solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, and comfort with scientific ideas is essential

  • In-depth knowledge of Adobe CC (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), K4/InCopy/InDesign workflow

  • Familiarity with the use of stock agencies, and obtaining permission/license for visual assets

  • Experience working with editorial/conceptual illustrators, and the ability to art direct illustrations

  • A high level of design sophistication with an eye for the detail that makes good design great

  • Keen eye for photography and illustration, and exceptional typography skills

  • Work well under pressure, multitask, and adhere to tight deadlines

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator

  • Works well both independently and collaboratively

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in graphic design, a plus

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is between $70,000 and $80,000 per year.
