Job Description: Reporting to the Design and Production Manager, the Senior Publications Designer will work closely with Getty staff, freelancers, and vendors to produce a wide range of high-quality illustrated art books, including exhibition catalogues, academic monographs, trade titles, and children's books for both print and digital formats.

Getty Publications produces award-winning books that result from or complement the work of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Foundation. The approximately 35 books published each year cover the fields of art, photography, archaeology, architecture, conservation, and the humanities for both the general public and specialists. Most books are published in print and an increasing number are published digitally as well.

Responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with editors and authors to evaluate and understand the unique needs of each project and research book content for design and layout direction. Develop design treatments and/or refine design templates to conceptualize and present appropriate and creative design solutions for publication projects.

  • Work closely with the book team to manage the design process, including preparation of full layouts, typesetting, type and design corrections, reviewing final artwork through to supply of print-ready files to production, adhering closely to budget and schedule commitments.

  • Work alongside the digital team to produce cover designs for our short-run digital and print-on-demand titles.

  • For select projects, supervise the work of outside vendors for typesetting, type corrections, creation of technical illustrations and diagram/chart/map preparation.

  • Work closely with production colleagues on the physical aspects of each project, discussing materials and collaborating on color proofing as required. Examine and understand technical production issues that impact the design approach, working together to find practical and cost-efficient solutions.

  • Keep informed of new and updated design software and trends in book and cover design and production.

Job Requirements:
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design (BA or BFA) or a related field.

  • 5+ years experience designing illustrated books and other materials for print, including experience managing complex books and multiple projects.

Staff Designer, Foreign Policy

Job Description: Foreign Policy (FP) is seeking a versatile multiplatform designer and visual communicator to help build FP's brand identity across divisions. We're looking for someone at the intersection of design, marketing, and media who knows how to relay information that draws people in and engages them to stay using clean, compelling visuals. You'll work closely with the creative director and art director — in collaboration with events, podcast, marketing, and social media teams — to craft and iterate visuals to promote FP products. What you'll do:

  • Brand identity: Iterate and improve FP's visual identity across departments, with an eye toward visuals that adhere to house standards while appeasing a diverse and growing roster of partners in the geopolitical, technology, and NGO space.

Job Description: People Magazine’s art department seeks a full time staff Associate AD to design print pages on the weekly as well as design motion graphics and other digital design work for our moving covers, projects for People.com and on our social media platforms. What you’ll do: On an average week, you will design various pages of the print publication, ranging from more templated pages to free-form creative feature design.
