Job Description: Texas Monthly is currently seeking a creative, enthusiastic and hard-working chief photo editor to join its award-winning editorial team. This person will work closely with the art department, story editors, and writers to produce engaging photography for our print magazine, website, and other editorial platforms.

While preference will be given to candidates who are based in, or willing to relocate to Austin, candidates located elsewhere in Texas will be considered.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Aid in establishing the visual direction for Texas Monthly, through the photography we assign and publish.

  • Mentor and provide support for junior staffers, including an assistant photo editor

  • Produce photo shoots: suggest photographers, secure shoot locations, source stylists, organize schedules, and provide direction for photographers on set

  • Research and source archival and stock photography, as needed

  • Compile caption and credit information for stories; clear rights and permissions for images

  • Work with design and production teams during the proofing process

  • Oversee the photography budget

  • Manage billing and contracts

  • Pitch and produce photo essays

  • Support projects across product teams as needed
