Medium is looking for an enterprising Art Director who is passionate about editorial design and loves to develop smart, elegant visual solutions that are compelling to readers on desktop, mobile or social. You would be part of a small team responsible for creating and commissioning art for our in-house publications (GEN, OneZero, Elemental, ZORA, Forge, Marker and LEVEL) as well as other editorial initiatives that support creators on the platform.

Successful candidates will have experience working in an online newsroom/magazine environment collaborating with editors on various topics from personal essays to features and longform investigative pieces. You will also have a portfolio that demonstrates outstanding taste, range, attention to detail, and a proven track record executing complex stories and packages.

The ideal candidate is a highly effective communicator who must be comfortable in a fast-paced, digital startup culture and be ready to get their hands dirty and have fun!

Job Requirements:

What will you do?
-Provide arresting, original, and expressive design solutions for daily posts, feature stories, and special projects for multiple publications.
-Commission original award-winning illustrations, photo illustration, and photography as needed.
-Contribute expertise in one or more of the following areas: Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Motion Graphics/Animation.
-Work with the publications' operations teams to deliver work in a timely and efficient manner.
-Be curious and proactive about exploring new approaches to visual storytelling, as our platform grows and develops over time.

Who are you?
-You have a minimum of 4+ years of experience working in editorial design. You have a rolodex of dynamic and diverse illustrators and creatives you can tap. You are passionate about typography, design, and illustration and are a positive, straightforward and effective communicator.
-You have a strong work ethic and vision to see projects from concept to publish.
-You are versatile and comfortable working in a start-up environment, where speed, flexibility, and experimentation are part of the day-to-day culture.
-You believe that good ideas can come from anywhere. You are proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator).
-You have some experience with designing infographics, After Effects and GIF-making knowledge. Some experience coding in HTML/CSS/Javascript desired, but not required

Art Director, Dwell Magazine

Job Description: The Art Director is responsible for effectively completing complex design projects, including the layout of 6 print issues a year from initial design to print mechanicals, as well as digital initiatives such as website features, email, and marketing promotions.

This role reports to the Creative Director, while working closely with the Photo Director and Editor-in-Chief.

Responsibilities include:
+ Design and production of our flagship publication, Dwell Magazine
+ Help creating innovative layouts, including covers and features, and setting style standards
