Senior Designer, Art Media

Job Description: Art Media, the home of ARTnews and Art in America — two of the world’s leading publications covering the art world for the past 100+ years — is hiring a senior designer. This position is part of a group art department that supports both titles and will have the full creative support of a large media company. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of design sophistication, from concept through execution, and a strong eye for photography and superb typography skills. The candidate will assist the Design Director and work closely with editors and department heads to develop original design concepts.

We are seeking a strong contributor with 2-5 years of experience in magazine design who will stay ahead of the curve on design and web trends and best practices. 

Duties will include:

  • Generate innovative visual storytelling ideas and create compelling high-impact editorial pages for the magazines

  • Partner with Design Director, Photo Editors, and Editors on story development and visual concepts

  • Manage page production, pagination and prepare final pages for shipping and ensure layouts meet design and print standards

  • Design assets for artnews.com and artinamerica.com plus corresponding social networks and ensure they meet brand guidelines

  • Develop, design and build web-only features using CMS tools

Job Requirements:
Qualifications

  • BFA in Graphic design or similar

  • Accomplished designer with strong attention to detail and love of type

  • Strong concept ideation in a creative environment and advancing the brand in a competitive space

  • A sophisticated visual sense and ability to keep visual identity of each brand consistent

  • Expert-level knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite primarily InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS, and Sketch

  • Digital design experience with demonstrable knowledge of UX/UI

  • Excellent communication skills and experience talking through editorial ideas in a lively, collaborative environment

  • Strong organizational skills managing priorities and workflow

  • Ability to take direction, work quickly, independently and efficiently under pressure handling multiple projects and maintaining a calm attitude
